Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire Wedding Photographer Tips for a Pawsitively Perfect Day

Let’s be real – if you’re anything like me, your dog is more than just a pet. They’re family. So when it comes to your wedding day, why wouldn’t you want them there, wagging their tail right alongside you as you say “I do”?

As an Aberdeen wedding photographer who has captured everything from emotional first looks to golden retrievers crashing cake cuttings, I’m here to tell you: dogs at weddings are not only possible—they’re magical.

Here’s how to include your pup in your big day (without the chaos, and with all the cuteness).

1. Choose a Dog-Friendly Venue (Hello, Aberdeenshire!)

First things first- make sure your venue is on board. Thankfully many Aberdeenshire wedding venues are totally dog-friendly, from castle courtyards to cozy countryside barns. However, it’s always worth double-checking the rules (and maybe packing a lint roller or two).

If you’re looking for a dreamy venue that also welcomes your furry VIP, here are a few of my favourites:

🐾 Meldrum House – A stunning country hotel with incredible grounds, and they love dogs.

🐾 Aswanley – A rustic-luxe venue with a relaxed vibe and plenty of outdoor space for your pup to roam.

🐾 Maryculter House – Historic, romantic, and right by the river – perfect for sunset walks with your four-legged guest.

🐾 Logie Country House – Gorgeous and exclusive, with private grounds that feel like your own slice of heaven (yes, doggos included!).

🐾 Schivas Steading – Full of charm and countryside character, and the team are always happy to accommodate pups.

🐾 Netherdale House – A peaceful Georgian retreat with a warm welcome – for humans and hounds alike.

Wherever you choose, your dog will thank you for letting them be part of the best day ever. (And I’ll be there to capture every adorable second!)

2. Assign a Dog Chaperone

You’ll be busy being the stars of the show, so having a dedicated dog person; someone your pup knows and trusts is essential. They’ll be in charge of toilet breaks, water bowls, walkies, and cuddles on demand. Think of them as your dog’s personal wedding PA.

If you’re looking for someone amazing to take on that role, I highly recommend Julie from Spotlessly Chic. She’s not only incredible with dogs, but she totally gets how important your four-legged bestie is on your big day. Calm, experienced, and so thoughtful- Julie’s got you (and your pup) covered.

3. Plan Their Role (or Just Let Them Be Cute)

Your dog doesn’t need to be involved in every moment to feel part of the day. For instance, they might walk down the aisle or just pop in for a few portraits and cuddles.

Whatever you choose, As your Aberdeenshire wedding photographer I’ll be ready to capture those tail wags, surprise kisses, and heart-melting glances that make your day feel even more special.

4. Pack the Essentials

To keep your dog happy and comfortable, be sure to pack the basics: treats, water, poo bags, and their favourite toy. Additionally, if you’re going for an outfit, a floral collar or a little bow tie adds the cutest touch..

5. Think About Timings & Built-In Breaks

Weddings are a big day – for everyone, including your pup! After all, this will most likely be the first time your dog is surrounded by everyone they know and love all in one place, with tons of noise, hugs, and attention. It can be a little overwhelming, even for the most sociable of dogs.

Consider breaking the day into manageable chunks for them. Perhaps, they could arrive just before the ceremony for a calm walk and settle, take part in some portraits afterwards, and then head off for a quiet rest with their chaperone or back home for a nap.

Giving them space to reset and recoup is one of the kindest things you can do – and trust me, they’ll still completely steal the show (and your guests’ hearts) in the time they’re there.

6. Let Me Know!

If you’re including your dog in your wedding, tell me in advance! I’ll make a plan for the best light, the least distractions, and all the right angles to capture their floofy fabulousness. Whether you’re planning a relaxed garden wedding or a grand Aberdeenshire estate celebration, I’ll make sure your pup is part of the story.

Final Thoughts

Dogs at weddings? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. They bring joy, comfort, and a whole lot of personality to your wedding day. And as your Aberdeen wedding photographer, I promise to capture every paw-some moment.
